UNIT OVERVIEW
This revision unit covers the six main topics from Term 3. These topics appear heavily in your final NSC examination. Use this guide to consolidate your understanding, practise problem-solving, and build confidence.
By the end of this revision, you will be able to:
- Calculate internal resistance, terminal potential difference, and solve series-parallel circuit problems
- Explain how AC and DC generators and motors work, and perform calculations involving rms values
- Apply Einstein's photoelectric equation and explain light's particle behaviour
- Perform acid-base titration calculations and work with pH, [H₃O⁺], and [OH⁻]
- Balance redox equations, calculate standard cell potentials, and distinguish between galvanic and electrolytic cells
- Describe industrial processes for fertiliser production and their environmental effects
Where you'll see these topics in real life:
- Load shedding and your devices — Internal resistance explains why phone chargers get warm
- Eskom's power stations — Generators at Koeberg and Medupi use electromagnetic induction
- Solar panels — The photoelectric effect is the basis of photovoltaic technology
- Agriculture — Fertilisers keeping South Africa's maize fields productive come from industrial processes you've studied
- Car batteries — Galvanic cell principles explain how your vehicle starts
