UNIT OVERVIEW
Euclidean Geometry helps us understand the relationships between points, lines, angles, and shapes. Named after the ancient Greek mathematician Euclid, this branch of mathematics teaches us to prove WHY geometric relationships work, not just accept that they do.
In this unit, you will learn to:
- Revise and apply properties of lines, angles, and triangles
- Understand and prove triangle similarity and congruence
- Investigate and prove the Midpoint Theorem
- Define and classify special quadrilaterals (kite, parallelogram, rectangle, rhombus, square, trapezium)
- Prove properties of sides, angles, and diagonals of special quadrilaterals
- Apply geometric reasoning to solve problems
Where geometry matters in real life:
- Construction: Builders use properties of parallel lines and triangles to ensure walls are straight and roofs are stable.
- Land surveying: Surveyors use triangle properties to measure distances that cannot be measured directly.
- Design: Fashion and textile designers use quadrilateral properties to create symmetrical patterns.
- Sports fields: Groundskeepers use rectangle properties to mark out fields that meet official specifications.
